English:: topographic name denoting residence in the Middle Ages by an artificial mound (for a pagan burial or for public meetings) from a derivative of Middle English lew + -er a formation characteristic of Sussex and Surrey.
It is equivalent to atte Lewe see Lew.
Perhaps also a variant of Ewer with fused Old French definite article le but no proof of this has been found.
