Polish, Czech, Sorbian, and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): from Polish and Czech dialect lis ‘fox’; Upper Sorbian lis ‘he-fox’, a nickname for a cunning person or, in the case of the Jewish name, an artificial name. The presumably cognate Sorbian surname Liš is found in Germanized and probably also Americanized forms only (see Liesch and Lish). Compare also Lese, Lies, and Liss.
Czech: nickname for a man with a bald pate from a variant of the adjective lysý ‘bald’. French: variant of Lys, a habitational name from any of several places so named, e.g., in Nord and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
Galician: habitational name from Lis in Pontevedra province, Galicia (Spain). Compare Delis.
