Jewish (Ashkenazic): artificial name composed of German List ‘cunning’ or Lust ‘joy pleasure’ (with the vowel change from u to i peculiar to the Yiddish dialect spoken in Poland) + Mann (Yiddish man) ‘man’. Compare Lisman.

Americanized form of German Listmann: nickname for a clever person from Middle High German list ‘intelligence cleverness magic’ + man ‘man’; in modern German the meaning has changed to ‘cunning underhandedness’.

Possibly also an Americanized form of German Listemann: habitational name for someone from any of several places called Liste near Hanover and in Silesia.
