Irish: Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Lochlainn ‘son of the Norseman’ from the personal name Lochlann ‘stranger Norseman’ from a term denoting Scandinavia (possibly ‘land of lakes/fjords’).

This was a ruling family in Ulster.
