Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 佴, one possible origin that was traced back to Persian immigrants in present-day Jiangsu province during the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD). Chinese: Teochew, Hokkien, and Taiwanese form of the surname 賴 see Lai.

West African (Ghana): name found among the Ga people of unexplained etymology.
