Burmese (Chin): from a part of a male compound personal name possibly from nang ‘you thou’. — Note: Since Chins do not have hereditary surnames this name element was registered as such only after immigration of its bearers to the US.
As a surname of Burmese origin possibly also from Shan Nang a title of respect and a form of address for a woman similar to English ‘mistress’. — Note: This title is not used as a personal name in Burma but in the US it might have been in some cases registered (or counted in the census data) as a surname.
Cambodian: written ណាង probably of Chinese origin but unexplained etymology.
Chinese: Hakka form of the surname 寧 see Ning.
