Neston Family History

From Neston in Corsham (Wilts), which is recorded as Neston in 128, the place-name probably derives from Old English næss ‘headland promontory’ + tūn ‘farmstead settlement’. From Neston (Cheshire) which is recorded as Nestone in 1086, Neeston in 1338, Nesston in 1348, and Newston in 1560.

The place-name derives from Old English næss or Old Scandinavian nes ‘headland promontory’, or perhaps Old English *nesu ‘nose’ in the sense ‘promontory headland’ + Old English tūn ‘farmstead settlement’.

From Middle English an esten tun (Old English on ēastan tūne) denoting someone who lived ‘on the east of the village’.
