Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 農 meaning ‘agriculture’ in Chinese: (i) said to be from Shen Nong (神農) legendary ruler of China some 5000 years ago. He is credited with introducing the practice of agriculture and the use of herbal drugs to ancient China.

(ii) from an official post in ancient China called Nong Zheng (農正) ‘agriculture officer’.
