Swedish and Danish: ornamental (Swedish) or topographic (Danish) name from nord ‘north’. As a topographic name it would have denoted someone who lived in the northern part of a village or to the north of a main settlement or someone who had migrated from the north.

Norwegian: habitational name from the farm name Nor in Fjordane in western Norway (from nór ‘narrow waters strait’) or from the farm name Nord ‘north’ denoting a farm lying to the north of another farm.

German and French: from a short form of an ancient Germanic personal name with the first element nord ‘north’, for example Norbert.

Jewish (Ashkenazic): artificial name from German Nord ‘north’.
