Osman Family History
Osman Surname Meaning
Muslim (mainly Sudan, Egypt, Somalia, and Eritrea): from the personal name Osman, which is a variant of ʿUthmān (see Uthman), an Arabic Muslim name of unexplained etymology. Compare Othman. — Note: Since Somalis and Eritreans do not have hereditary surnames, their name was registered as such only after immigration of its bearers to the US.
Albanian: from the Muslim personal name Osman of ultimately Arabic origin (see 1 above). In North America, this surname is probably also an altered form of the much more common Albanian variant Osmani.
English (Hampshire): variant of Osmond. Americanized form of German Osmann, a variant of Ossmann.
Dutch: from a personal name composed of the ancient Germanic elements ans 'god' + man 'man'.
Croatian: from the Turkish Muslim personal name Osman (see 1 and 2 above). This surname originated as a nickname during the Turkish occupation of the Balkans. Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): perhaps a variant of Oshman or Hausman.
