Italian (southern; Piterà): occupational name from medieval Greek piteras ‘bran merchant’ or perhaps pitaras ‘maker of pita bread’ or ‘pie maker’ the former from piteron classical Greek pityron the latter from pita ‘flat bread pie’ + the occupational suffix -as.

Italian: habitational name from Piterà di Germaneto, a district of Catanzaro.
