Croatian and Slovenian (Pleše): nickname for a bald man or a topographic name for someone who lived on a glade derived from Croatian dialect and Slovenian pleša ‘bald head bald patch (in the forest)’ or from Croatian dialect plešiv Slovenian pleš(av) ‘bald treeless’.

The surname may also be a habitational name for someone from any of the settlements called Pleš in Lower Carniola Slovenia.
