Poffley Family History
Poffley Surname Meaning
From Poughley Farm in Chaddleworth (Berks), which is recorded as Pohanlech in a 13th-century copy of a document from 821 and Poghele in 1241, or Poughley in East Garston (Berks), which is recorded as Poghele in 136.
The place-names probably derive from Old English pohha ‘pouch bag’ + lēah ‘wood, woodland clearing’.
The sense of pohha in these and other place-names is unclear.
