Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 強 a word meaning ‘powerful strong’: (i) from Qiang Chu (強鉏) the name of an official in the state of Zheng (located in part of present-day Shaanxi and Henan provinces) during the Spring and Autumn period (770–476 BC). His descendants inherited 強 part of his name as their surname.

(ii) in some families this surname is traced back to the ancient ethnic group Di located in northwestern China.
