Catalan (Qué): variant of Quer a topographic name from quer ‘rock cliff’. Chinese: Mandarin form of the surname 闕 meaning ‘watchtower on either side of a palace gate or at a rampart of a palace’ in Chinese: (i) from part of the placename Que Dang (闕黨) also named Que Li (闕里) (located in present-day Shandong province) the birthplace of the famous philosopher Confucius (551–479 BC).

(ii) possibly a shortened form of the compound Chinese surname Que-Men (闕門) originally borne by residents who lived beside the watchtower of a palace gate. Chinese: Teochew Hokkien or Taiwanese form of the surname 郭 see Guo The dialects of this pronunciation are found in eastern Guangdong Fujian and Taiwan from where many people migrated to Singapore Malaysia Thailand and other parts of Southeast Asia.

Vietnamese (Quế): from the Chinese surname 桂 see Gui.
