Italian: possibly also a nickname from the dialect word raina ‘frog’ (compare Rana). Finnish (Räinä): habitational name from farms so named probably from some unknown terrain or vegetation term.

Established as a hereditary surname in northern Ostrobothnia since the 19th century. Indian (Jammu and Kashmir): Brahmin name believed to be from Sanskrit run ‘battle’.

Traditionally bearers of this name were engaged to recite incantations that ensured victory for their patrons in war.
