Rattle Family History

Perhaps from one or more lost or as yet unidentified places. One such might be Rattle Hall in Wye (Kent) of uncertain etymology which Kent Place-Names p. 387 suggests might be associated with an unexplained form de Ragkel 1276 in Feet of Fines. Compare Rattle Lane in Westham (Sussex) recorded as le Rattle in 1617 (Place-Names of Sussex p. 449); perhaps compare also Ratley.

Perhaps from a reinterpretation of Middle English tratel tratyll ‘talk idly gossip’ as suggested by Redmonds Dictionary of Yorks Surnames. See Trattle.
