French (Rémy); West Indian (in Haiti Martinique and Guadeloupe Rémy); Walloon and German: from a French personal name which represents a falling together of two distinct Latin names: Remigius (a derivative of remex genitive remigis ‘rower oarsman’) and Remedius (from remedium ‘cure remedy’).

The former name was borne by a 6th-century bishop of Rheims; the latter was borne by various other Christian saints of the 8th to 10th centuries.
