Dutch and North German: from Middle Dutch roscam Middle High German roskamp ‘currycomb horsecomb’ either an occupational (or habitational) name for the keeper of an inn named De Roscam or Der Rosskamm (‘The Horsecomb’) in Dutch and German respectively.

Alternatively, it could also be an occupational nickname for a groom or ostler at an inn. Inns would attract custom by offering to groom travelers' horses.
