Hungarian (Roskó): nickname for a red-haired man of Romanian origin (see Rosca). Slovak and Rusyn (from Slovakia) (Roško): habitational name from Roškovce in the Zemplín region in eastern Slovakia or a Slavicized form of Hungarian Roskó (see 1 above).

Slovak and Czech (Roško): perhaps a hypocoristic derivative of roh ‘horn’ or of the personal name Roch 1 Latin Rochus. Croatian (Roško): probably from a pet form of the nickname Rošo ‘red-haired’ (see Rosic) or its cognate Roso.

The surname Roško is very rare in Serbia, and in Croatia it may alternatively be of Hungarian origin (see 1 above). Compare Roscoe.
