from Rufford (Lancs) which is recorded as Ruchford in 1212. Rufford (Notts) which is recorded as Ruhford in 1201 or Rufforth (WR Yorks) which is recorded as Ruhford in about 1190. The place-names derive from Old English rūh ‘rough’ + ford ‘shallow place by which water can be crossed ford’.

Perhaps a variant of Ruffett (1) or (2) altered by folk etymology to conform with the name in (1). Compare Thos. Ruffehead 1722, Thos. Rufford 1726 in IGI (Luton Beds); Sara Ruffott 1602, Sarah Rufford 1627, Elizabeth Ruffoot 1636, Mary Rowford 1637 in IGI (Canterbury Kent); William Rufford 1749, William Ruffet 1759, Mary Ruffett 1763 in IGI (Strood Kent).

However, it is possible that Rufford in (1) migrated to the S Midlands and E Anglia where it became confused with Ruffett of other origins.
