Probably an alternative pronunciation of Ramsby, a variant of Ransby (see Ranby). The change in vowel results from a confusion in early Modern English of /a/ and /æ/ with /ʌ/ from a lowering and unrounding of Middle English /u/.

Thorington (see the 1632 example of Rumsby) is next to Bramfield (Suffolk) where William Ransby is recorded in 1726 in IGI.

The change of -nsb- to -msb- is attested in Willm. Ramsby 1565 in IGI (Ipswich Suffolk).
