Polish, Czech, Slovak, Sorbian, and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): metonymic occupational name, nickname, or a Jewish artificial name from Polish, Czech, and Slovak ryba ‘fish’. As a metonymic occupational name, it may have denoted a fisherman or a seller of fish (see also Ribar, Rybak, and Rybarczyk).

As a nickname, it may have been bestowed on account of some fancied physical resemblance to a fish. The Sorbian surname is found mainly in Germanized forms, such as Riebe.
