Japanese: written 佐渡 ‘help’ and ‘cross’ a habitational name from the island of Sado in the Japan Sea. Other names with the same pronunciation but no relation to the island are written with 戸 ‘door’ or 土 ‘earth’ as the second character and the first character might also be written 左 ‘left’.

Japanese (Sadō): written 左道 ‘road on the left’ or 左同 ‘same as on the left’ and the first character might also appear as 佐 ‘help’ in some cases.
