Santon Family History
Santon Surname Meaning
Italian (Veneto): variant of Santone. Spanish (Albacete and Alicante; Santón): probably an equivalent of Catalan Santó (see Santo). Alternatively but less likely a habitational name from a place called Santón in Galicia.
English (Yorkshire): habitational name primarily from Sancton (East Yorkshire) but perhaps also from Santon (Cumberland, Norfolk) or Santon in Appleby (Lincolnshire).
The placenames derive from Old English sand ‘sand’ + tūn ‘farmstead, estate’ with the -c- in the East Yorkshire placename due to influence from Middle English sanct saint ‘saint’.
