English (Dorset and Somerset): nickname from Old French and Middle English certain ‘reliable trustworthy’. The phonetic change of -er- to -ar- was a normal process in Middle English.

Italian (Veneto): variant of Sartini. In some cases possibly also French: topographic name from a diminutive of sart a shortened form of Old French essart ‘newly cleared land assart’ (from Late Latin exsartum past participle of exsarire ‘to weed out grub up’).
