Americanized form of German Sauermann and a variant of the same Jewish (Ashkenazic) surname: variant of Sauer ‘sour’ formed with Middle High German man German Mann ‘man’. In Jewish families it is mainly artificial assigned at random by Austrian clerks. Compare Saurman 1 and Jewish Zorman.

Altered form of North German Sauermann: topographic name from Middle Low German suder sūr ‘southern to the south of a point’ for someone living south of a settlement. Compare Saurman.
