Schur Family History

North German: from Middle Low German schūr ‘shower of rain’ or ‘bad storm’ in any of several possible senses. It may be a nickname for an easily excitable person, an occupational name for the warden of a park or piece of common land (from the same word in the sense ‘protection’; compare Schuetz), or a nickname from the same word in the sense ‘clever’.

German (Schür): variant of Scheuer. Germanized form of Sorbian Žur: nickname from žur ‘leaven’, also ‘kind of drink made from hemp seeds’. Germanized form of Polish Żur (see Zur).

Jewish (Ashkenazic): variant of Shor.
