North German (Schütter) and Dutch: occupational name for a guard, watchman or warden from an agent derivative of Middle Low German schutten ‘to protect’. This was also an occupational name for an official who impounded stray cattle. See also Schuetz.
Dutch: occupational name for an archer or bowman, subsequently a status name for a member of a marksman's guild Middle Dutch scut(t)ere.
