Sherrington Surname Meaning

From Sherington (Bucks), which is recorded as Schirintone in 1179, and Sherrington in Selmeston (Sussex), which is recorded as Sirintone in 1086, or possibly Sherrington (Wilts), which is recorded as Scearntune in a 13th-century copy of a document from 968 and Scarentone in 1086.

The Bucks and Sussex place-names derive from the Old English personal name Scīra + Old English connective -ing- + tūn meaning 'farmstead estate'.

The Wilts place-name derives from Old English scearn, meaning 'dung muck', combined with tūn.
