Shinner Family History

Shinner Surname Meaning

Early Modern English variant of Skinner with Shin- substituted for Skin- perhaps on the analogy of words of Scandinavian origin in sk- which have native doublets in sh- words such as skirt and shirt.

Compare Edmond Skinner 1609 in IGI (Rye Sussex) with the 1608 bearer below. Compare also the Devon place-name Skerraton which is recorded as Skiredon in 1228 and Shyradon in 1425.

Interchange of the two sounds was an occasional feature of Devon dialect.
