English (Kent): from the popular Middle English female personal name Sisely (Old French Cecile Cicile from Latin Caecilia feminine form of the Roman surname Caecilius a derivative of caecus ‘blind’). This was the name of a early Christian virgin martyr of the 2nd or 3rd century who came to be regarded as the patron saint of music.
