from Syderstone (Norfolk) which is recorded as Cidesterna Scidesterna in 1086 Sidesterne Sydesterne in 1198 Sithestern in 1287–9 and Sisterne in 1395–6.

The place-name has not been satisfactorily explained. It possibly derives from Old English sīd ‘broad wide extensive’ + an obscure element *sterne (perhaps meaning ‘property’ if it is a metathesized form of ge-strēon).
