Russian, Belorussian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, and Jewish (eastern Ashkenazic): patronymic from the Slavic word sokol ‘falcon’ used as a nickname or as a personal name (see Sokol).
It is formed with the Slavic possessive suffix -ov. In some cases the Russian surname represents an artificial name assigned to pupils in ecclesiastical schools.
As a Jewish name it is generally artificial. Compare Sokoloff.
