English and Welsh: habitational name from Stackpole (Pembrokeshire) apparently named with Old Norse stakkr ‘stack’ + pollr ‘pool’ referring to a stack of rocks on the coast at the entrance to Broadhaven.

The name was taken to Ireland and adapted by settlers of Norman descent where it is recorded in Dublin as early as 1200.

The name has been Gaelicized as de Stacapúl; the family was also known in Irish as Galldubh ‘dark stranger’.
