Italian: from a female personal name based on stella ‘star’ or from a short form of Battistella or some other personal name ending in -stella.

From stella ‘star’ applied as a topographic or habitational name referring to a house distinguished by the sign of a star or from any of the places so named (for example in Savona and Salerno).

It can also serve as a topographic name for someone who lived at a place from which roads radiated out in various different directions.
