Danish: habitational name from any of several places called with tange ‘spit tongue of land’. Dutch and Flemish: metonymic occupational name for a carpenter or a smith from Middle Dutch tange ‘pliers, tongs, pincers’.

Japanese (pronounced as two syllables): written 丹下 ‘red below’, apparently referring to red earth. The name is from a village in Kawachi (now Ōsaka-fu) and is mainly found in Shikoku.

It can also be pronounced Akashita.
