German (of Slavic origin): from a Germanized pet form of any of various Slavic personal names such as Tešimir or Těšimir with the first element teš ‘to comfort to console’ (see Tesch Tessmer and 2 below).

Germanized form of Sorbian Tešk and Těško: from Lower Sorbian and Upper Sorbian pet forms of an Old Sorbian personal name such as Tešimir (see 1 above) and perhaps also a nickname from Lower Sorbian tešk a vernacular diminutive of ptak ‘bird’.
