French:: in the north e.g. in Eure-et-Loir probably a variant of Toutain from the Norman personal name Tostain from the Old Norse name Thórsteinn composed of the name of the god Thórr (see Thor) + steinn ‘stone rock’ hence meaning ‘altar of Thor’ or perhaps ‘hammer of Thor’. This surname is rare in northern France.

Elsewhere e.g. in Rhône and Saône-et-Loire probably from a derivative of the Old French verb tuter meaning ‘to play an instrument’ or ‘to drink’.
