Travell Family History
Travell Surname Meaning
From Old French and Middle English travail ‘work, exertion, suffering, travel’. From the past participle of Old French travaillier, traveillier ‘to work, struggle, suffer, travel' corresponding with Middle English traveled, travailed ‘weary, burdened, travelled’.
Perhaps occasionally from Treales in Kirkham (Lancs) which is recorded as Trivel' and Trevel' in 1249. The place-name appears to derive from words related to Welsh tref ‘hamlet, town’ + llys ‘court, hall’.
