Wakeling Family History

Wakeling Surname Meaning

English (Middlesex and Essex): habitational name from Great and Little Wakering (Essex). The placename means ‘the people of a man called Wacor or Wæcer’ from the Old English personal name Wacor or Wæcer + the Old English groupname suffix -ingas.

This surname is well documented until the 19th century but has now died out in the form Wakering surviving instead as Wakeling and becoming indistinguishable from Walklin with which it is sometimes a variant (see Wakeland).
