Perhaps from an unrecorded early Middle English female personal name Winburgh -bury -bery (Old English Wynnburh) with n changed to m before b. The personal name is formed with Old English wynn ‘joy’ + burg ‘fortress’.

Perhaps from Wembury (Devon) which is recorded as Wymbury in 1283 but there is no medieval evidence that this place-name gave rise to a surname.

The second element of the place-name is Old English burg ‘earthwork fortification’ but the first is obscure.
