Wistow Family History
Wistow Surname Meaning
From Wistow (WR Yorks), which is recorded as Wicstow about 1030, Wistow (Hunts) is recorded as Wicstoue in a 14th-century copy of a document from 974, or Westow (ER Yorks), recorded as Wifestowe in 1237 and Wystowe in 1365.
The WR Yorks and Hunts place-names derive from Old English wīc-stōw, meaning ‘dwelling place, camp’ (wīc ‘dwelling, specialized farmstead’ + stōw ‘place, assembly place, holy place’).
The ER Yorks place-name appears to mean ‘place belonging to women,’ derived from Old English wīf ‘woman’ (genitive plural wīfa) + stōw.
