Woolbridge Family History

Woolbridge Surname Meaning

Probably from Wool Bridge in East Stoke (Dorset) or Woolbridge in Mayfield (Sussex) though the medieval bearer from Norfolk cannot be easily explained. The Dorset place-name is recorded as Wellebrigge in 1318 and takes its name from Wool in Dorset (see Wool) + Old English brycg ‘bridge’.

The Sussex place-name is recorded as Wolbridge in 1562; its etymology is uncertain due to a lack of medieval forms though the final element appears to be Old English brycg.
