German: from a short form of the personal name Borkhardt, a variant of Burkhart. Possibly an altered spelling of South German Bös (see Bos). Danish: medieval variant of Buus, a surname of uncertain origin, perhaps from German busemen ‘devil’, ‘ghost’.
