From any of the six places called Castlehowe in Westmorland, usually recorded very late, the earliest being Castle Howe in Kendal (1577) and Castlehowe Scar in Crosby Ravensworth (1629).

The form de Castello, not infrequent in medieval sources, is probably a latinization of Castle, but may have contributed to these names.
