Americanized form of Croatian and Serbian Gulić and Slovenian Gulič: probably a nickname from a derivative of guliti ‘to flay to skin’ and ‘to chafe to rub’. Alternatively, a nickname derived from gol ‘beardless’ also ‘naked’ (see Golic). Compare Gulick and Gulli.
Germanized form of Sorbian Gólik: derivative of Lower Sorbian góły ‘bald, beardless’ applied as a nickname for a bald or clean-shaven man. German (Gülich): variant of Jülich (see Julich) a habitational name from Jülich in North Rhine-Westphalia (see also Guelker).
