Finding Families for the Forgotten: Unclaimed
Unclaimed is a six-part investigative docu-series exploring the discovery of thousands of forgotten cremains of patients who had died at Oregon State Hospital (OSH), a psychiatric hospital.
The series unearths the personal stories of those patients through the work of dedicated genealogists and the building of family trees. Their goal? To find living descendants so that the remains of these former patients can be reunited with their families after decades of being unclaimed.
In Episode 1, host Amy Standen dives into the work of volunteer genealogist Phyllis Zegers, who has made it her personal mission to restore dignity and memory to those who died in the institution and were left behind.
In the rest of the season, you can look forward to family tree research linking OSH patients to notable figures like Sylvia Plath, and the fascinating story of the hospital serving as a filming location for the iconic movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), just in time for its 50th anniversary this year.
